My career ...

I have three years big firm training, and 25 plus years experience as a barrister.  Building on wide experience in Courts and Tribunals at all levels, I now specialise in criminal appellate work, relationship property, family property (wills and trusts), disciplinary matters, and general civil litigation.  Click on the Cases tab above for examples of cases I have appeared on (note that this needs updating).

I was appointed a Queen's Counsel in December 2019.

As well as private instructions, when my caseload permits I accept instructions for criminal appeals on Criminal Legal Aid, Civil Legal Aid cases, and Family Legal Aid cases involving relationship property, the Family Protection Act, and other family property cases.

I get the most professional satisfaction from analysing a set of facts (or more commonly versions of facts), and preparing a case which results in a settlement without expensive or time-consuming litigation.  For example, recently I have obtained legal aid, issued proceedings and achieved settlements for two sets of clients who had suffered losses as the result of failings by their earlier lawyers.

I work closely with Robert Lithgow KC on many criminal appellate matters, and find that two heads rather than one is usually the most effective way to identify any issues arising following conviction in a lower Court. Many of our successes have been in the Supreme Court, and I also have solo experience there.

I have been appointed amicus curiae (counsel to assist the Court) in the District Court, High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court, in both civil and criminal matters.
